If you want to venture into the Inner Richmond District of San Francisco, You will find the “other” Chinatown of San Francisco. Clement Street is definitely a food coinsurer’s paradise. There are lots of Chinese food restaurants including The Tong Palace. Tong palace advertises Hong Kong style Dim Sum lunch and dinner.
Upon arrival, you will be given a choice of upstairs dining or downstairs dining. Definitely choose the downstairs because you will have more choice from all the carts of the best Dim Sum you will taste outside of Chinatown. Choose from authentic Dim Sum dishes such as Cha shu bao (steamed bbq porkbun) shumai (meatballs wrapped up and steamed) Hargow (shrimp dumplings) Chow fun with mushrooms or meat (thick rice noodles stuffed with mushrooms or meat) sweet sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf. Garlic spinach, Spring rolls and sesame balls.
The good thing about Dim Sum is that you get to look at what you get before you buy it. The plates and steamers are classed as small, medium and large. As you point out the dishes you want from the carts and trays, the waitress will mark your bill (score card) with a stamp in the appropriate section of the card/bill until you are stuffed. The tea is free and all you can drink. You may also order specialty dishes from the kitchen from their extensive ala carte menu.
If you are staying near Union Square, it’s a single bus ride on the 38 Geary to the inner Richmond district. Get off around 10th or 11th avenue to walk up one block to Clement street. So stop by for a quick brunch or snack on your way to the Great Highway.
