The name ‘Eliza’s’ doesn’t exactly conjure up the typical image of a Chinese restaurant, but this little gem in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco provides above average cuisine at a below average price. We were celebrating a birthday in the office, so after a quick drive down Townsend St, Eliza’s was suggested as a good place to grab lunch. We were there quite early (probably just before 12) and I would definitely recommend arriving early to avoid the rush that can happen at lunch.
The menu had lots of different choices and it was difficult to pick out the one that sounded most delicious. Most dishes were under $7, which was a pleasant surprise as you get a generous portion for your buck. As an appetizer, everyone gets a little bowl of egg soup and some green tea, which prepares you nicely for the main course.
So, between four of us we ordered a salmon and asparagus with fried rice, a kung pao chicken with fried rice, a sweet and sour pork with fried rice and shrimp, surprising also with fried rice. Opinions of each varied slightly, but we all agreed that the food was excellent. I personally enjoyed my kung pao chicken a great deal (well, considering my base of comparison is Panda Express…) and I was told the salmon and asparagus was among the best meals Ralph had eaten recently, which is not something I hear from him a lot!
The service was among the best I’ve ever had at a San Francisco restaurant. My plate was taken away as I finished the last bite, and the food was served in a pleasant and timely fashion, so this really is great value for money. If I had to find fault with the staff, I would say that smiling a bit more couldn’t do any harm.
Potrero may not be an area you visit much unless you live there, but it’s not far from downtown or Mission if you have a car, by all means give this place a try. Parking is limited so explore some of the side streets to find a spot, otherwise arrive early and you should be able to find a space just outside.
Definitely on my list of ‘better’ restaurants!
